Pittsford
The Town of Pittsford sits in the southeastern portion of Monroe County. The town reports a land area of 23.2 square miles and a population of 29,405, of which 1,355 live inside the incorporated Village of Pittsford. The village is a separate municipality within the town, which matters for taxes, services and sometimes for what buyers mean when they say they want to be "in Pittsford". See current Pittsford homes for sale.
The Erie Canal. The canal runs through Pittsford and is the defining feature of the area. The canal path is used year round, the canal shopping district sits alongside it, and Great Embankment Park on Marsh Road has canal views, a fishing pier and a canoe launch. If canal access is part of why you are looking here, pay attention to which side of the canal a home sits on and how it connects to the path.
Housing stock. Pittsford is a mix of older homes in and around the village, established post-war subdivisions, and newer construction toward the southern and eastern edges of the town. Older village properties come with the usual trade-offs of age and character, including smaller lot dimensions, narrower driveways and the maintenance profile of an older building. Newer developments sit on larger, more uniform lots.
School district. The town is served by the Pittsford Central School District. District boundaries do not follow municipal lines exactly, so confirm the district for the specific address rather than assuming it from the town or the mailing address.
Open space. Pittsford runs an open space program it calls the Greenprint for Pittsford's Future, and the town's parks department maintains over 255 acres of active parkland. Named parks include Thornell Farm Park on Mendon Road, King's Bend Park on Jefferson Road, Great Embankment Park on Marsh Road, Farm View Park on Calkins Road, Hopkins Park and Carpenter Park at the Port of Pittsford.
Property taxes. Village residents pay a village tax in addition to town and county taxes, so two homes a short distance apart can carry materially different bills. Always read the bill for the specific parcel. For a side-by-side look at how Pittsford compares with a neighboring town, see Pittsford vs Brighton taxes and commute compared.
